London Councillors – The expansion at Gatwick is the better solution to the South-East’s aviation crisis.

In a YouGov poll of 263 London councillors, it shows that 38% preferred a second runway at Gatwick, while 32% supports the four-runway at Estuary airport, and one in four favoured the third runway at Heathrow, behind expansion of Stansted.

gatwick-londongatwick.coThis answer could indicate a change of attitude among councilors away from supporting a “superhub”, however it could also be a sign of growing opposition between Londoners to Heathrow expansion on environmental grounds.

Gatwick is in an agreement of not building a new runway until 2019, hence, the earliest expansion plans would encounter disagreements from residents and environmentalists.

For now, the Birmingham airport chiefs have called on the Government to dump plans for a new runway at Heathrow. With regards to the Airports Commission on capacity, they have sum up plans that would allow the airport to manage 70 million passengers a year, same as Heathrow’s capacity.
