A Call for Gatwick Airport Expansion

Posted on 19. Apr, 2013 by in News

Philip Hammond, Current Defence Secretary and former Transport Secretary, calls for Gatwick Airport’s second runway expansion.

He said: “Why not… expand London’s existing single runway airports at Gatwick and eventually Stansted, to two runways each, providing decades worth of passenger growth capacity.”

He also ruled out expansion at Heathrow and Stansted airports as a way to solve the south East’s aviation capacity.

Chairman of the Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign, Brenson Sewill said: “Philip Hammond’s constituency is near Heathrow so thank-you for sending the noise to us!

“Making Gatwick bigger than Heathrow would mean massive in-migration of new workers with pressure on housing, health services and schools.”

Gatwick Airport’s Commission is looking into the question of South East aviation capacity, and will present their complete findings by 2015.
