The first phase restoration of Gatwick airport’s South Terminal shopping area has opened today for the customers.

About ten new or updated shops was launched and there will also be 12 more stores including Aspinal of London and Earnest Jones will also open later this year.

On August 1, Harrods will also launch its department store which will offer fashion and accessory items.

Gatwick expanded its area due to customer recommendations. On YouGov, the survey shows 2,060 passengers found that 56% sought for a more high street and international brands, 38% wants a premium department store, and 22% wanted designer brands.

Spencer Sheen, airport’s head of retail, said: “This is a huge step forward in improving the experience for our passengers and transforming Gatwick into London’s airport of choice, as well as setting the benchmark for airport retail in the UK.

“Around 93 per cent of our passengers visit a retail outlet before boarding and 86 per cent will make a purchase so we need to offer them the right mix of services and products, whether it’s a luxury department store, family restaurant or high street favourite.”

The restoration of Gatwick airport’s South Terminal shopping area costs £21 million.
